How EPDs contribute to our Sustainability objectives

Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) are a key element of our commitment to transparency and continuous improvement. They help us demonstrate the environmental performance of our solutions in a clear, credible way and directly support our Sustainability objectives by:

  • Providing verified and comparable data on the life‑cycle impacts of our products.
  • Helping customers make informed decisions that reduce the environmental footprint of their construction projects.
  • Supporting compliance with green building certifications.
  • Guiding our R&D teams toward lower‑impact product development, eco‑design, and innovation.

Our objectives

As part of our Sustainability objectives, we aim to cover 100% of our product portfolio with EPDs.
All products already documented with an EPD carry the “EPD Verified” logo, making them immediately identifiable on our communication materials and digital platforms.

Through EPDs, we strengthen trust with our clients and contribute to a more sustainable and low‑carbon construction sector.

EPD Verified

What is an EPD and how is it developed?

An Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) is a standardized, third‑party‑verified document that presents the quantified environmental impacts of a product based on a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). It follows recognized international standards (EN 15804+A2, ISO 14025) and provides objective, science‑based information.

These assessments are becoming increasingly mandatory in some countries for construction projects, in particular in Europe.

What does an EPD contain?

Each EPD deliver clear, consistent, and comparable information across the construction industry:

Basic product information

scope, functional unit, intended use

Life cycle stages assessed

production, construction, use, end of life, and beyond‑boundary benefits

>20 environmental indicators

including global warming potential (in kg co₂ eq) , resource use, energy & water consumption, waste generation, …

Third‑party verification details

ensuring compliance and reliability

Saint‑Gobain’s approach to developing EPDs

At Saint‑Gobain, EPD development is primarily supported by a dedicated team of internal LCA experts who use advanced, internationally recognized LCA software to model products accurately and deliver EPDs that comply with international standards.

However, we may also rely on external LCA partners to support certain assessments. Additionally, we complement our portfolio with generic EPDs developed by professional associations.

This combined approach ensures that all EPDs associated with our products remain robust, compliant, and fully recognized by the construction sector.

Generic EPDs developed by EFCA and EFCC

In addition to product‑specific EPDs, the European admixture industry —through EFCA (European Federation of Concrete Admixtures Associations) and EFCC (European Federation for Construction Chemicals)— has developed generic, sector‑wide EPDs for several categories of concrete admixtures.

These generic EPDs ensure consistency across the industry for commonly used admixture families (e.g., water reducers, superplasticizers, accelerators, retarders).

Chryso fully supports these industry initiatives and uses them as a complementary resource to provide customers with transparent, recognized environmental information.

Only subsidiaries belonging to a national association that is part of EFCA are authorized to apply these EPDs to the products they manufacture.
